I WANT TO ATTEND
I ATTEND BUT I WANT TO DONATE to CultureALL
StoryMob is a quarterly interactive storytelling event that provides local storytellers with an opportunity to share a 5-minute story (true or fictional), focused upon a unique story prop chosen for the event.
The prop for the August event is school supplies or a backpack. Storytellers are encouraged to interpret the theme, and their ability to fully incorporate the story prop into their tale will greatly improve their chances to win cash prizes.
The evening will beginwith stories from CultureALL’s Cultural Ambassadors Eric Idehen (from Nigeria) and Yuki Shozaki (from Japan), who will lend cultural perspective to each story prop. This will be followed by an open competition, where anyone is welcome to step up to the microphone to tell a story.
Storytellers will be given a score by a panel of three judges: professional storyteller Steve Zelino, guest judge Kay Fenton Smith (author of Zachary's Bridge), and one audience member, selected on the night of the event. The storyteller with the highest score is awarded $100 in cash.
Storytellers can also win by raising support form the “mob” (general audience). The mob scores each storyteller on a blank sheet of paper, which they wad up and throw onto the stage. At the end of the evening, the storyteller with the most mob support (as determined by three random scores) is awarded $50 in cash.
StoryMob is appropriate for all ages, but most interesting for children over 12. Storytellers of any age are welcome to participate.
Tickets are $5 per person, with proceeds going to CultureALL and the Des Moines Social Club.
